What Are Active Chats?
Active Chats displays all your ongoing conversations with other Pasaj users. These chats are directly linked to specific books and swap proposals.
Unlike typical messaging apps, chats in Pasaj are not organized by username. Instead, each chat is labeled with the book title.
This design ensures clarity, especially if you are exchanging multiple books with the same reader. For example, you may have two separate conversations with the same person for two different book exchange proposals. Naming chats by book title prevents confusion and duplication.
How Chats Are Created
🚫 You cannot start a chat manually by searching for a user or tapping a “New Message” button.
A chat is automatically created only after:
- A swap proposal is sent or received.
- The other party accepts the proposal or you accept the proposal.
- Both users are officially matched for that specific book.
This process is explained in detail in the Getting Started guide. Chats exist solely to support confirmed book swap agreements and help users coordinate the exchange books nearby.
How to Access Active Chats
To view your ongoing conversations:
- Tap on Chats
in the bottom navigation bar. - Make sure Active tab is selected.
You will see a list of all current chat threads associated with your accepted proposals.
How Active Chats Are Organized
Each chat item in the list contains the following information:
- Book thumbnail
- Book title
- Author name
- Distance between you and the other user
- Avatar of the other user
- Incoming
or outgoing
proposal indicator icon - Timestamp of the latest message
If a chat is muted, a muted
icon will also appear. Muting a chat blocks push notifications for that specific conversation only. It does not affect other chats.
Filtering Chats in Active tab
If you have multiple active conversations, you can Filter
your Active Chats to quickly locate specific records.
Chats can be filtered by:
- Book title
- Author
- Display ID
- Distance
- Your role · Proposer or Owner
- Category
- Membership type
Filtering helps you efficiently track your ongoing attempts to swap books nearby.
Unread Messages
When you receive a new message:
- The chat automatically moves to the top of the list.
- The book title and message preview appear in bold.
This helps you quickly identify which swap books nearby require your attention.
If you have multiple unread conversations, you can mark them all as read at once:
- Open Chats
in the bottom navigation bar and land on Active tab. - Tap the More Options
button at the top right corner. - Select Mark All Read.
This action removes the unread status from all conversations in the list.
Opening a Chat
To enter a conversation:
- Tap on the chat item.
- You will be redirected to the dedicated chat page.
- Continue exchanging messages with the other user to coordinate your book exchange.
Chats remain active as long as the swap process is ongoing. Once the swap is completed and confirmed by both parties, it will move to History tab, and the conversation history remains accessible within that context.
